The Carpet Institute of Australia Hall of Fame’s purpose is to recognise the achievements of outstanding individuals who have shaped the future of Australia’s carpet industry. The program is a lasting tribute to pioneers, innovators, and ambassadors whose contributions have significantly advanced the industry’s economic development, technological innovation, and cultural impact.
Induction into the CIAL Hall of Fame acknowledges a remarkable body of work, a lifelong contribution to the Australian carpet and flooring sector, or a significant role in advancing the profession and its standing in the built environment.
The CIAL Hall of Fame is held every two years and this inaugural event will set the tone for many years ahead.
Jim Smith is a defining figure in Australian flooring retail and the founder of Carpet Call. Arriving in Australia as a young man with little more than ambition and a relentless work ethic, he built a single-store operation into a nationally recognised network of more than 130 stores. Renowned for his customer-first philosophy, seven-day service culture, and unwavering attention to detail, Jim set new benchmarks for dedication and trust in retail. Beyond commercial success, his greatest legacy lies in the thousands of Australians he has employed, mentored, and supported over decades, building not just a business, but a lasting institution grounded in integrity, opportunity, and community.
Geoffrey is a highly respected authority in the Australian carpet industry, with a career spanning decades and defined by exceptional expertise, leadership, and a deep commitment to advancing the sector. Beginning his career with the Wool Corporation as Manager of Interior Textiles, he demonstrated rare technical insight and vision, guiding the development of numerous carpet products that achieved lasting commercial and technical success. His work helped strengthen Australia’s manufacturing capability and establish the benchmarks of quality for which Australian carpets are renowned.
In recognition of his expertise, Geoffrey later served as Chairman of the Grading Scheme, where he became the architect of the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) Star Rating system. What began as a bold initiative to introduce transparency and accountability into carpet performance assessment evolved, through rigorous analysis, real-world testing, and decades of refinement, into the trusted industry benchmark for textile floor coverings in Australia and New Zealand. Under Geoffrey’s stewardship, the ACCS remained technically robust, fiercely independent, and universally credible.
Admired for his professionalism, integrity, and willingness to mentor others, Geoffrey consistently fostered collaboration and innovation across the industry. His calm authority and analytical rigour earned the trust of manufacturers, retailers, and consumers alike, while his lifelong dedication ensured Australian carpet is judged, and found excellent, by the toughest measure of all: reality. His enduring legacy is woven into every confident recommendation, every satisfied customer, and the ongoing strength and reputation of the Australian carpet industry.
